So, you know how we said that this accidental run in between Connor McDavid and Milan Lucic defined the Edmonton Oilers’ miserable season so far? A mere few hours later, we’ve found a play that’s eclipsed it in the worst possible way.
Edmonton Oilers lose game on heartbreaking own goal with a minute left
Poor Kris Russell...

With the Oilers tied 4-4 with the Toronto Maple Leafs after making a valiant comeback to turn a potential lost cause into a game, Kris Russell made the mistake of the season.
As the seconds ticked down to the last minute of the game, Russell and Maple Leafs’ forward Nazem Kadri were batting in front of the Oilers net. On Russell’s attempt at defending the puck, the defenseman instead swung it into the net behind goaltender Laurent Brossoit for an own goal to break the tie.
The goal was the eventual game winner for the Maple Leafs with 1:05 left on the clock in the game. Toronto added another empty netter to seal the win 6-4 on an own-goal for the ages.
The worst part may have been that Russell had given the Oilers the tying goal earlier in the third period, and the own-goal suddenly snatched a chance at a point away from the team. Though, this reaction from Kadri after the goal is also pretty heart-wrenching.
Sometimes, sports are bad. Sorry Edmonton.
