The World Junior Championship got its first taste of outdoor action this year, as it brought a historic hockey rivalry outside on Friday afternoon. The United States and Canada participated in the tournament’s first ever outdoor game, and what a day it turned out to be.

The United States took home a 4-3 victory in the shootout despite Canada owning a two-goal lead heading into the third period, but the real star of the show was the venue. New Era Field in Buffalo was blanketed in snow before the game and it didn’t take long for conditions to turn white during the game.

Make no mistake, though, the game between two historic rivals now has implications for the remainder of the tournament. Both the United States and Canada sit at 2-1 in Group A with just one game to play in the round robin, meaning their final games over the weekend will determine the top of their group.
