The Washington Capitals addressed a trade deadline need on Wednesday, acquiring defenseman Tom Gilbert from the Los Angeles Kings.

The Kings received future considerations for the veteran. The Kings are paying 20 percent of Gilbert’s remaining salary, and the Kings get a conditional fifth-round pick.

The 34-year-old defenseman played just 18 games with the Kings this year, racking up five points before being demoted to the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League. Gilbert had just one assist in the AHL before this week’s trade.

The Capitals immediately assigned Gilbert to their own AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears.

Gilbert is likely a depth defenseman for the Capitals’ playoff run. Making only $450,000 this year, Gilbert will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Los Angeles could be gearing up to make a bigger move by clearing Gilbert’s cap space, although that money was already buried and not a significant drain on their cap.

Per Cap Friendly, the Kings will have $9,032,855 in cap space at the trade deadline.
