Blues take Patrik Berglund off trade market with a 5-year extension

Berglund’s deal is worth $19.25 million.

One of the few centers potentially available at the 2017 NHL trade deadline has left the market.

The St. Louis Blues announced on Friday they’d signed center Patrik Berglund to a five-year, $19.25 million contract extension. Berglund was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Berglund was at the end of a three-year deal worth $3.7 million per year. His new deal will pay him $3.85 million per year. So, a bit of a raise.

New Blues coach Mike Yeo spoke highly of Berglund last week. The 28-year-old winger has spent his entire career in St. Louis, and could set a pretty nice mark if he plays out his new deal. From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

If Berglund were to make it, without injury, to the end of that five-year contract, he would have appeared in more games than anyone in Blues history. He’s currently tied with Bob Plager for seventh overal at 615 games. The franchise record is 927 by Bernie Federko.

Berglund essentially played himself off the trade market with 16 goals in his last 30 games. He ranks second in the team in goals this year as the Blues surge after firing Ken Hitchcock earlier this month.

The only notable St. Louis unrestricted free agent is Kevin Shattenkirk. Trade talk continues to swirl around him.
