Kevin Shattenkirk’s tenure with the Washington Capitals hit its first speed bump.
Kevin Shattenkirk suspended 2 games for charging Kings defenseman
It’s the first such penalty for the new Capitals star.

The newly acquired defenseman was suspended by the NHL Department of Player Safety on Sunday for a charging penalty in Los Angeles over the weekend. Shattenkirk will miss two games and forfeit $47,222.22 of his salary, which will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
Shattenkirk was attacking in the offensive zone against the Kings on Saturday when L.A. defenseman Kevin Gravel retrieved the puck behind his own net. Shattenkirk accelerated and quickly bulldozed Gravel, which led to a penalty and Shattenkirk’s suspension.
You can watch the play and the Department of Player Safety’s reasoning in the video below.
Ah, the penalties of being short. Have to jump to make a hit.
This is Shattenkirk’s first suspension or discipline of any kind. It comes at a poor time for both he and the Capitals. Shattenkirk had registered a point per game over the last four contests, giving him four points in five games since joining the Capitals in a trade before the trade deadline. Washington has lost four straight games.
