Devils rookie starts brawl with Rangers after getting hit into stanchion

Miles Wood can kind of thank Zdeno Chara.

Nobody will forget the dread when Zdeno Chara rode Max Pacioretty into the stanchion at TD Garden a few years ago.

The hit left Pacioretty in the hospital and made the NHL completely re-work those bench stanchions, rounding them into curvatures to keep something that horrific from happening again.

But when you get hit like Pacioretty did, even now, it’s bound to ruffle your feathers a bit. So when New York Rangers defenseman Nick Holden rode New Jersey Devils winger Miles Wood into the stanchion on Tuesday, Wood came up looking for revenge.

A few Devils teammates joined Wood, grabbing any white sweater near them as the arena went nuts.

Three fights erupted: Wood, Holden, Nick Lappin, and Jimmy Vesey all earned five-minute fighting majors. But Wood got tacked with the extra penalty minutes for instigating the fight, so New Jersey had to kill it off.

The slo-mo replay really makes you appreciate those curved stanchions.
