Jack Eichel questions Sabres’ work ethic after another disappointing season

Eichel has been outspoken in the past about his teammates’ effort.

The Buffalo Sabres’ rebuild hit a major speed bump this season, and their young star is getting more and more vocal about his displeasure.

Jack Eichel didn’t have much to say after the Sabres’ season finale on Sunday, but he opened up to the media as the Sabres cleaned out their lockers on Monday. And Eichel put his teammates on notice.

From John Vogl of The Buffalo News:

“I think guys want to win,” Eichel said on Monday, “but there’s a difference between saying you want to win and actually wanting to win and putting the work in and dedicating your life to it.”

This isn’t the first time Eichel has called out teammates publicly this season. On Jan 1., the 20-year-old center said the team “needs to look in the mirror” before the season spiraled totally out of control. Last week, Eichel called his first two years in Buffalo “mediocre,” “disappointing” and “embarrassing for us players.”

It’s enough to have our Sabres blog openly wondering about coach Dan Bylsma’s job security.

Eichel finished with a fantastic individual year with 57 points and 24 goals after missing 21 games early in the season.
