Cam Fowler’s injury looms large.

It’s not clear when Cam Fowler will be back on the ice. The Anaheim Ducks just know their top defenseman won’t see the start of the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs.

And they know their first round opponent is responsible for that.

Fowler injured his leg a week ago when Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano landed a late hip check that tweaked his knee and sent him sprawling into the net. That sparked a game full of testiness, fights, and general mayhem.

So, a good prologue to a playoff series between Pacific Division rivals.

Anaheim will host the Flames for Game 1 on Thursday, and will rely on youngsters like Brandon Montour to fill in for Fowler. It’s a West Coast game, so fill up on coffee or something. This series already has an edge and it hasn’t started yet.
