The 2017 NHL free agent class got a little thinner on Friday when T.J. Oshie decided to re-sign with the Washington Capitals.
NHL free agency 2017: T.J. Oshie re-signs for 8 more seasons with Capitals
And a lot of cash, too.

The deal is worth $46 million over the next eight seasons, meaning Oshie will earn about $5.75 million per year. It also all but guarantees that impending Capitals free agent defenseman Karl Alzner won’t be back; Washington still needs to sign John Carlson to a long-term deal.
Oshie played the last two years in Washington and fit well, scoring 59 goals and 107 points in 107 games. The 30-year-old right winger eclipsed the 30-goal mark for the first time in his career last season; Alex Ovechkin was the only Capital to score 30 goals in every season since 2009-10.
The winger also scored four goals and 12 points in 13 playoff games with Washington this spring.
Just hours before the news, reports circulated that the Blackhawks were interested in signing Oshie. So much for that.
