Two-time Stanley Cup champion Trevor Daley is headed to Detroit, as the 33-year-old defenseman has signed with the Red Wings in free agency. The report first came from NHL Network’s Kevin Weekes, but was then confirmed by Helene St. James with the Detroit Free Press.
Red Wings sign depth defenseman Trevor Daley to a three-year deal
Detroit has inked the two-time Stanley Cup champion to $3 million a year.

The Red Wings have gotten Daley on a three-year, $9 million contract that will pay an average of $3 million per year.
Daley was instrumental in both of the Penguins’ Stanley Cup runs in the postseason as a depth defenseman. The 33-year-old played an average of 19 minutes a night as the Penguins dealt with the loss of Kris Letang, as that patchwork of a defensive core helped stabilize Pittsburgh enough to win their second Stanley Cup in a row.
The defenseman had 19 points in 56 games this past regular season, but has a history of injuries that may give some pause. Detroit, however, can add Daley right into their lineup of defenseman for the year.
The free agency market has seen its share of depth defensemen fly off the shelves. With Kevin Shattenkirk’s new deal to New York — maybe — and Karl Alzner signing in Montreal, the market on depth defensemen is starting to thin.
