The Arizona Coyotes will be without 19-year-old defenseman Jakob Chychrun for an indeterminate amount of time, the team announced on Thursday. Chychrun underwent successful knee surgery after being injured this past week during offseason training.

The young defenseman should make a full recovery, but the Coyotes noted in their press release that Chychrun is out “indefinitely.” Arizona will update further on Chychrun’s situation when the team gets training camp underway on Sept. 14.

The loss of Chychrun for any period of time for the Coyotes is quite the blow, as the 19-year-old is one of their up-and-coming cornerstone defensemen. As a rookie last season, Chychrun put up 20 points in 68 games and was expected to be given a bit of a bigger role this year as he continues to develop. The Coyotes still have defensive depth after adding Niklas Hjalmarsson to their roster this past offseason, but losing Chychrun makes Arizona a worse team come opening day.

Chychrun was drafted at 16th overall by the Coyotes in the 2016 NHL entry draft and was a considered a steal by many as the defenseman was projected to be a top-three talent. He jumped right into the NHL after being drafted but sat a few games in the press box last season despite a high-offensive upside.
