The Columbus Blue Jackets and center Alexander Wennberg have come to terms on a six-year deal. On Friday afternoon, the team announced the re-signing of the 22-year-old forward on a deal that will cost $29.4 million in total over the next six years, with a $4.9 million average annual value.

With the signing, Wennberg will now be under contract with the Blue Jackets until the end of the 2022-23 season.

Wennberg was the Blue Jackets’ second-best scorer last season with 59 points in 80 games played. The 22-year-old forward broke out last year in the team’s top six, posting career highs across the board and leading Columbus with 46 assists. Wennberg was selected as the 14th overall pick in the 2013 NHL draft and he finally got his due last season as the team’s second-highest forward in terms of ice time.

The forward was a key cog in the Blue Jackets’ ascension to third in the Metropolitan Division last year, as the team hit the 100-plus point mark for the first time in franchise history. During Columbus’ near-historic 16-game win streak, Wennberg posted 15 points as one of the team’s leading scorers at the time.

The deal is quite the steal for Columbus, as Wennberg is projected to play a big role on the team for years to come.

Wennberg was a restricted free agent this offseason after finishing off the final year of his three-year entry level deal that he signed back in 2014. The Blue Jackets will now pay their projected top-line center $4.9 million per year through his late 20s.
