The Boston Bruins and forward David Pastrnak have come to terms on a six-year, $40 million extension, TSN’s Darren Dreger announced Thursday. Pastrnak’s new deal will run through the 2022-23 season with an AVV of $6.67 million.

The 21-year-old right winger was one of the biggest restricted free agents left to sign this offseason after the Oilers locked up Leon Draisaitl. Pastrnak was also recently rumored to be on the trading block by the Bruins due to the stalled contract negotiations. General manager Don Sweeney denied those reports swiftly and has since signed Pastrnak for the next six seasons.

Pastrnak is coming off a breakout 2016-17 season in which he scored 70 points in 75 games for the Bruins in a bigger role as one of Boston’s top-line wingers. His 70-point season was second only to Brad Marchand’s 85-point season that lead the Bruins to a 95 point finish in the Atlantic Division. Pastrnak also finished tied for 10th in goals across the NHL with Anders Lee and Patrick Kane at 34 on the season.

He is considered a key piece in the Bruins upcoming future, and many fans were concerned given that negotiations had hit a “holding pattern” in late July. Given Draisaitl’s deal and Sweeney’s trade rumor denials, it seemed only a matter of time for Pastrnak to get his due in contract negotiations.

This deal will take Pastrnak until he’s 27 years old, meaning another large payday could be near should the young forward continue to impress. Pastrnak apparently used recently signed Filip Forsberg as a comparison in negotiations.

Pastrnak is coming off his three-year entry-level deal with the Bruins that was signed back in July 2014. The new deal now gives the Bruins approximately $3.53 million in cap space to work with for the 2017-18 season with all their major pieces signed through the upcoming year.
