Mike Hoffman had himself quite a preseason game for the Ottawa Senators on Monday night. The forward scored twice in the first period in a 6-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, but it didn’t start out that grand.
Senators player tosses stick after missed chance, scores seconds later anyway
From frustration to joy in five seconds.

On a Senators power play early in the first period, Hoffman had a wide open net to shoot at but missed high. Frustrated, Hoffman took to showing his frustration in a unique manner, with play still continuing on behind him:
Such style, such grace. It reminds me of my brief time in marching band watching my school’s color guard practice with rifles before our shows.
Also, the complete nonchalance with which Hoffman throws his stick in the air after missing a scoring chance in preseason is something else.
But wait! Hoffman got another chance on the play just seconds later. And what do you know...
...he buries it! Hoffman didn’t miss the top shelf above Curtis McElhinney that time, as he helped Ottawa take a 2-0 lead with less than five minutes gone in the first period.
In case you were wondering, here’s the entire few-second scenario in GIF form where you can witness the highs and lows of Hoffman’s emotions in real time:
The Senators even turned the play into a meme, featuring your favorite Game of Thrones moment from the most recent season.
Never give up on your dreams, my friends.
