Connor McDavid, Alex Ovechkin, and Marc-Andre Fleury were among the winners at the 2018 NHL Skills Competition on Saturday night. The annual precursor to the All-Star Game was a fun evening as always, even if we didn’t quite get any timeless moments that’ll go down in history.
Connor McDavid, Alex Ovechkin lead winners at 2018 NHL Skills Competition
It was a fun night of hockey challenges in Tampa.

McDavid won the Fastest Skater competition to open the festivities in the least surprising fashion possible. Apparently players were disinterested in participating in the event because of his remarkable skating prowess, and it’s not hard to see why given the seemingly effortless way he went on to victory.
The other winners were as follows: Ovechkin won the Hardest Shot competition, Fleury won the Save Streak event, Alex Pietrangelo won the first-ever Passing Challenge, Johnny Gaudreau won the Puck Control Relay, and Brock Boeser won the Accuracy Shooting contest.
Unlike in past skills competitions, there was no team dynamic to this year’s contests. The winner of each event was rewarded with $25,000, which isn’t a bad bonus for a few minutes of work. Here’s a look at the most fun moments and the complete results from Saturday night.
Five best moments
Drew Doughty’s passing challenges
A defenseman may have won the passing challenge, but Doughty struggled badly with it. It took him more than twice as long as Pietrangelo to finish the series of drills, which stressed me out just watching him.
P.K. Subban’s shootout distraction
In the Save Streak competition, Subban had a fun plan to try to beat Henrik Lundqvist.
Too bad that didn’t work.
Marc-Andre Fleury wins Save Streak while Frozen theme plays
Fleury needed the right music to inspire him to greatness in the Save Streak competition. He needed the right music to ensure he would never let go of the puck once he got it. The right music to freeze skaters in their tracks. How about “Let It Go,” the theme song from Frozen?
Fleury went on a ridiculous 14-save run against the Atlantic Division skaters while Idina Menzel belted out in the background. It seemed like Pekka Rinne’s 13-save total would be impossible to top, but we shouldn’t have underestimated the power of Flower when he’s listening to Disney music.
Alex Ovechkin becomes first forward to win Hardest Shot since 2002
Ovechkin is the first forward to win the Hardest Shot competition since Sergei Federov in 2002. He did it with a final speed of 101.3 miles per hour, the lowest figure to win the event since Al MacInnis in 2003, but the Capitals winger still blew away the competition.
He didn’t even need his second shot after winning with a 98.8 mile per hour shot on his first try, but used it to rifle home an even harder shot to add distance to his victory. When asked by NBC afterwards whether he’d score 50 goals again this season, Ovechkin smiled and said, “You know me.” Tell me what
Brock Boeser shatters target in victorious Accuracy Shooting effort
It looked like Brian Boyle might have an incredible story out of Tampa after a fantastic showing to open the Accuracy Shooting competition, but Canucks rookie Brock Boeser managed to hit all five targets on just eight shots to slip under the Devils veteran’s score.
And not only did Boeser win the competition, but he forced a delay during it by firing a shot so hard that it broke one of the targets. The stars enjoyed it:
