Alex Burrows will serve a 10-game suspension after instigating a fight, then kneeing Taylor Hall repeatedly in the head. The ruling from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, which came down on Wednesday evening, after the Ottawa Senators forward went after the New Jersey Devils forward the previous evening.

Burrows will be return for the Senators on March 2 for a game against the Vegas Golden Knights.

The incident between Burrows and Hall occurred midway through the second period of Tuesday night’s game in Ottawa. Hall was escaping a nearby scrum when Burrows went after the forward and brought him to the ice. In the midst of their scrap, Burrows repeatedly took his knee to the back of Hall’s head.

Burrows was penalized on a two-minute minor for roughing and crosschecking on the play, but was not tossed from the game.

Here’s the NHL’s video on the suspension, calling Burrows the “aggressor” of the attacks against Hall.

“In short, for the sole purpose of retribution Burrows drags an unwilling opponent to the ice, punches him several times, then uses his knee pad to violently inflict more punishment on his opponent’s head,” the video states. “This is a dangerous and unjustifiable attack that runs the risk of severe injury, and such plays will not be tolerated by the Department of Player Safety.”

While Burrows is not classified as a repeat offender by the NHL, he was suspended once in October 2014 and has been fined five times during his 893-game career.

Due to the suspension, Burrows will forfeit $134,408.60 in salary along with the missed game time.
