Syracuse Orange vs Pitt Panthers Betting Odds, Preview, Trends

Top ranked Syracuse is a rare underdog tonight, laying 1.5 points at Pitt. Duke also plays UNC is marquee ACC betting action.

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

The Syracuse Orange have fended off all comers this season with a 23-0 SU and 14-5 ATS record.

Syracuse faces its toughest road challenge of the season Wednesday night visiting the Pittsburgh Panthers at the Peterson Events Center. The Orange are currently a 1.5-point road underdog and face a team that has dominated them in recent years with a 7-2 ATS run.

Ranking 7th in the nation on defense allowing just 58.4 points per game and 187th on offense scoring 71.1 points per game, the Syracuse Orange aren’t built to shoot out and instead tend to smother opposing teams with sound defensive play.

They showed off their versatility at the beginning of this month though in a 91-89 win over Duke, proving that they can score with the best of them when necessary. C.J. Fair had 28 points and Jerami Grant had 24 in the win. The Orange are 7-2 ATS over their last nine games.

Pittsburgh currently owns the second best overall record in the ACC at 20-4 SU but is just 8-11-2 ATS. The Panthers are built in a similar fashion to Syracuse with an emphasis on defense ranking 11th in the country allowing opponents 60.1 points per game.

The Panthers have been slightly better on offense than Syracuse averaging 73.3 points per game, led by leading scorer Lamar Patterson’s 17.2 PPG. Pittsburgh is 2-2 SU and 0-4 ATS over its last four games, per the closing line at 5Dimes.eu.

While Pittsburgh has trended towards the OVER this season, each of its last two games have gone UNDER the total. The total has also gone UNDER in nine of Syracuse’s last 11 games overall and in three of the last four games between these two teams.

From 2005 to 2011, Pittsburgh completely owned this rivalry to the tune of a perfect 8-0 SU and ATS record. But Syracuse has turned things around in recent seasons with a 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS record over its last four games against Pittsburgh including a 59-54 win as a 4.5-point home favorite earlier this season.

The two teams play a similar style of basketball; points should be hard to come by, and the team that limits mistakes and makes big plays should come out victorious.
