Texas Longhorns vs. Iowa State Cyclones: Big 12 betting odds, preview

Texas and Iowa State have similar records and similar rankings but the Longhorns are road underdogs on the Big 12 basketball betting menu Tuesday.

Both the Iowa State Cyclones and Texas Longhorns have five losses this season, and the two teams are separated by just two spots in the AP Top 25 with Iowa State at No. 17 and Texas at No. 19.

Tuesday night’s game between the two Big 12 rivals at Iowa State could give the winner a nice boost in seeding come tournament time.

The Cyclones were a 5-point favorite at home, according to most sportsbooks monitored by SBNation’s odds partner OddsShark.com. But the bulk of early wagering action (more than 85%) was on Texas as of Tuesday morning, according to the NCAA basketball consensus data.

Iowa State’s 14-0 SU and 9-2-1 ATS start had the basketball program generating plenty of buzz, but since January 11 the Cyclones are just 5-5 SU and 1-9 ATS. But with wins in four of their last five games including an impressive road upset over Oklahoma State as a 7-point underdog, Iowa State may be turning things back around.

The Cyclones have an opportunity at home here to make a statement against the surging Texas Longhorns. It also make a difference for bracket placements as future March Madness betting starts factoring into handicapping.

Texas (20-5 SU) hit a mid-season slump that started at the end of December when the Longhorns went 1-3 SU and ATS with home losses to Michigan State and Oklahoma and a road loss to Oklahoma State. Since then, the Longhorns are 9-1 SU and 6-4 ATS with outright upsets over Iowa State, Baylor, and Kansas.

Texas is 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS in its last four games away from home.

Including this year’s win against Iowa State, the Longhorns have owned the heads up battle between these two teams with an 11-2 SU record in their last 13 games against the Cyclones.

Iowa State holds a slight 7-5-1 ATS edge over that stretch, but Texas has covered the spread in each of its last three wins over the Cyclones, per the closing lines at 5Dimes.eu.

The total has gone OVER in nine of the last 12 games between Texas and Iowa State including each of the last three. The total has also gone OVER in each of Texas’s last two games and in six of Iowa State’s last eight games.

Iowa State’s offense ranks fifth best in the country at 84.1 PPG and Texas ranks 49th at 76.9 PPG; both teams are comfortable shooting out and will likely do so again on Tuesday night.
