Kentucky Derby 2015 odds: Morning line released

American Pharoah opens with the best odds.

American Pharoah enters Saturday as the odds-on favorite to win the 141st running of the 2015 Kentucky Derby, receiving 5-2 odds. The horse is followed closely by Dortmund at 3-1 odds.

Behind the top two horses are Carpe Diem at 8-1 and Materiality and Firing Line, both at 12-1. They are followed by Upstart and Frosted who have been issued 15-1 odds.

At the other end, the horses with the longest odds are Ocho Ocho Ocho, Keen Ice, War Story and Mr. Z. Each horse in that group has 50-1 odds to win.

Several factors go into determining a horse’s odds. Prior performance is perhaps the most important indicator, but a horse’s post position also plays a significant role. This year’s Kentucky Derby includes a total of 20 horses, a reduction of one from a year earlier. As such, the horse with the farthest post position has a slightly better chance than the year prior.
