Another week, another nail-biter for USC. After storming back from a 21-7 deficit to take a 28-21 lead in the fourth quarter against Utah, the Trojans allowed a late touchdown that gave Utah the chance to go for a two-point conversion to win the game. But USC made the stop and escaped with a 28-27 win.
The Trojans improved to 6-1 with the victory but fell to 1-6 ATS, failing to cover the spread in each of their last five games.
In their last eight games as an underdog, the Trojans are just 1-7 SU and ATS, per the OddsShark College Football Database. USC did win in its last turn as an underdog, defeating Washington as 9.5-point dogs on the road last season.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Notre Dame may be one of the most underrated teams in the nation. The Fighting Irish are 5-1 SU and ATS and have earned their five wins by an average margin of victory of 28 points per game.
The one blemish on Notre Dame’s record is a 20-19 loss at home to Georgia, and the Bulldogs are still undefeated and are the No. 3 team in the nation. Notre Dame’s win on the road over Michigan State was impressive, but a win Saturday over USC could help push the Fighting Irish into the Top 10.
Saturday’s total is set at 60 points at online gambling sites. The UNDER is 6-1 in USC’s last seven games played in the month of October.
Both of these teams are fringe playoff contenders that could desperately use this win to strengthen their cases. Rivalry games always carry an extra intensity about them, but this one should be especially good with so much on the line for both teams.
