The Nittany Lions could have secured their spot as the team to beat last Saturday on the road against the Ohio State Buckeyes, but instead fell just short in a thrilling 39-38 game in Columbus.
Even in defeat Penn State continued to reward its backers, earning another ATS victory as 7-point underdogs to improve to 15-1-1 ATS over its last 17 games. As a result of the loss, Penn State no longer controls its own destiny in the Big Ten or in the race for a College Football Playoff spot.
No underdog has upset the Nittany Lions since November of 2015. Penn State is 15-0 SU in its last 15 games as a favorite and 10-1-2 ATS in its last 13 games as one, per the OddsShark College Football Database.
Michigan State Spartans
Like Penn State, Michigan State enters this game coming off a painful and hard-fought loss. Despite 445 passing yards and four passing touchdowns from sophomore quarterback Brian Lewerke, the Spartans were unable to outlast the Northwestern Wildcats in a 39-31 triple-overtime loss.
The loss snapped a 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS streak for the Spartans and essentially eliminated them from playoff contention. Michigan State is 7-1 ATS in its last seven games at home.
Saturday’s total is set at 48 points. The OVER is 6-1 in the last seven meetings between these two teams.
With such similar disheartening losses last Saturday, it will be interesting to see how hyped up these two teams are this week. A big late-season loss can derail a season or serve as a motivator to finish strong. If both teams come into this one angry, it could be a physical and exciting game.
