US Open 2017 odds: Roger Federer set as betting favorite on tournament odds

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal top the betting odds board in an injury-shortened US Open men’s field, while Garbine Muguruza is the chalk on the women’s side of the draw.

Roger Federer has turned back the clock this season, winning his first Grand Slam title since 2012 with his victory in the Australian Open and accomplishing the feat of two title wins in one year for the first time since 2009 with his win at Wimbledon. The Swiss pro will try to earn the 20th Grand Slam title of his career at the US Open.

Federer is a +175 favorite on the odds to win the US Open at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.

While he was pushed to five sets three times in the Australian Open, including his epic final against Rafael Nadal, Wimbledon came without any drama. All six of Federer’s matches were decided in straight sets, a dominant performance that inspires plenty of confidence heading into the US Open’s injury-plagued field.

Federer won this tournament five years in a row from 2004 to 2008, but hasn’t won since.

As impressive as Federer’s run through to the Wimbledon title was, Nadal was even more dominant en route to his French Open victory this season. Nadal (+300 to win the US Open) won all six matches of that tournament in straight sets without ever even needing a tiebreaker. The King of Clay has had less success with the switch to hard court, but he remains a threat on any surface.

Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Milos Raonic were all forced to withdraw from the US Open with injuries. The field is suddenly pretty wide open, and this could be the time for Alexander Zverev (+450) to announce himself on the biggest stage. The 20-year-old has won five singles titles this year including three on hard court, and his form and talent suggest that he’s ready for success at this stage.

Other potential US Open contenders include Grigor Dimitrov (+1600), Marin Cilic (+1600), Nick Kyrgios (+1600), Dominic Thiem (+2200), and Juan Martin del Potro (+2500).

On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova makes her return to grand slam action at +900 at online betting sites in a crowded field of contenders including Garbine Muguruza (+600), Karolina Pliskova (+700), Johanna Konta (+800), Simona Halep (+900), Elina Svitolina (+1000), Angelique Kerber (+1200), Petra Kvitova (+1400) and Venus Williams (+1400).

Muguruza has two singles titles this season including her win at Wimbledon this summer.
