MLS Week 29: Crew Win Trillium Cup; McBride Bids Farewell To Fire Fans

William Hesmer’s stoppage time goal salvaged a point for the slumping Crew, who also retained the Trillium Cup — the rivalry trophy they share with Toronto FC.

Hesmer, a goalkeeper, had come forward on a corner kick and was a little lucky as he controlled a deflection off his chest and then struck the ball through several Toronto defenders.

Toronto FC, who was playing in front of protesting fans, have not won at BMO Field since Aug. 7.

The Crew stretched their winless streak to six MLS matches, currently the worst run of form in the league.

In Chicago, Fire coach Carlos de los Cabos pulled forward Brian McBride from the match with two minutes remaining so that the legendary striker could receive a standing ovation from his home crowd during his final match in Chicago. That match between two teams already eliminated from the playoffs ended in a scoreless draw.
