Danleigh Borman scored in the 48th minute to give New York some life and the Union needed to save a ball off the line in stoppage time, but ultimately held on for the victory.
The Red Bulls loss means they are stuck on 48 points, while the Crew earned a tie to get to 47 points with both teams having one match left to play.
