Hector Mancilla scored three goals in Toluca’s 5-0 victory over FAS to secure its place in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.
CCL Group Stage: Toluca, Olimipia Secure Passes To Quarterfinals
Toluca had entered the day as the only Mexican side not already through to the next round and was in danger of ruining the Primera’s perfect record of never having a team fail to advance.
Mancilla’s 19th minute strike helped remove much of the pressure. He added two more goals in the second half.
Juan Cuevas and Nestor Calderon finished out the scoring for Toluca.
The other spot in Group D went to Olimpia, who secured the top spot by beating the Puerto Rico Islanders 3-0. In that match, Roger Rojas scored two goals and Fabio De Souza had one for Olimpia, which became just the third non-Mexican side to win a group in the three-year modern history of the tournament.
Monterrey finished off their undefeated tour through Group C with a 1-0 victory over Marathon. Monterrey’s only blemish in the group stage was a tie to Saprissa.
All eight quarterfinal teams are now set with one match left to be played. The Columbus Crew and Joe Public play the final group stage match Thursday, but the Crew have already secured passage.
