Chris Wondolowski scored three goals, giving him 17 for the season and moving him into a tie with Edson Buddle for the most in MLS as the Earthquakes dispatched of Chivas USA 3-0.
MLS Final Week: Wondolowski’s Hat Trick Gives Him Share Of Golden Boot
The hat trick is Wondolowski’s second of the season and gives him more than half the Earthquakes’ 33 goals. Wondolowski would be the first MLS player to score at least half of his team’s goals since Carlos Ruiz scored 24 of the Galaxy’s 44 goals in 2002.
The win gives the Earthquakes 46 points on the season and moves them into the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. That would mean a first-round date with the Columbus Crew.
The 46 points also means all eight playoff teams will have a Points Per Match of at least 1.50, the first time that has ever happened in MLS history. Last year, the Supporters’ Shield was won with 49 points, a total that has already been eclipsed by three teams and could be equaled by as many as seven teams.
