Dane Richards scored early and Joel Lindpere scored late as the New York Red Bulls beat the New England Revolution 2-0 to clinch the top spot in the Eastern Conference.
MLS Final Week: Red Bulls Clinch Top Spot In Eastern Conference
This is New York’s best finish since the MetroStars finished atop the Eastern Conference in 2000 with 54 points. At 51 points in 30 matches, the Red Bulls have a PPM of 1.7, a franchise best for them. The turnaround from their last-place finish of a year ago was the second biggest PPM turnaround of all time. Only the MetroStars' worst-to-first turnaround from 1999-2000 was larger.
The Red Bulls also became the fourth team this season to surpass last season’s Supporters’ Shield winning total of 49 points. The Columbus Crew and Seattle Sounders still have a chance to pass that total as well and the San Jose Earthquakes can still reach 49 points.
The win clinches home-field advantage in the first two rounds of the playoffs for the Red Bulls, who won 10 games and claimed 71.1 percent of the available points at Red Bull Arena. That win total is second only to Real Salt Lake, who won 11 matches and have not lost in 32 matches at home across all competitions.
