Considering Arsène Wenger is a man desperate to win hardware, it should come as no surprise that Arsenal fielded a stronger side than in previous Carling Cup matches. Of course, this could also be attributed to the fact that the Gunners once again had players that needed to be nursed back from injury. Theo Walcott's brace showed that the England international is ready to fight for a place in the starting XI, and Nicklas Bendtner, who scored on Sunday in his first match back, added another. Own goal made the score line 0-4 and put Arsenal through.
Carling Cup Fourth Round: Newcastle Falls To The Arsenal 0-4
Ted Harwood from The Short Fuse reflects on the start of the match:
It was a game that Arsène Wenger looked set to win emphatically, a strong side put out on the pitch with Cesc Fabregas lurking on the bench. And the Gunners indeed got the drop on Newcastle, Carlos Vela and Nicklas Bendtner generating two quick chances from the opening whistle. Arsenal ended up with eight shots in seven minutes, none of which found the net, though.
