Neither 8 pm ET kickoff provided too much entertainment for the majority of the matches, but Santos and Chivas turned it on circa the 87th minute for an absolutely wild finish.
Santos Laguna 1-1 Chivas de Guadalajara, Tigres de la UANL 0-0 Jaguares de Chiapas: Full Time Review
The Mexican Primera’s leading scorer Cristian Benitez added to his tally, putting Santos up after 87minutes of scoreless play. Juan Rodriguez sent in a ball from the left wing that was re-directed towards Benitez by Oribe Peralta. Benitez applied the finishing touch like he has 12 times prior this tournament, putting a brilliant header into the back of the net for his 13th goal of the Apertura.
Only two minutes later, one of the biggest disappointments of the season, Omar Arellano arrived in a huge way, hitting the equalizer for his first goal of the tournament. Marco Fabian surged into the area, taking multiple defenders with him, before laying off for a surging Arellano. He powered towards the ball and slotted it past the keeper, giving Chivas an important equalizer to avoid dropping further down the table and keeping them just barely alive for a Liguilla place.
Jaguares will be disappointed that they were unable to solidify their Liguilla credentials with a win over Chivas, but thanks to a loss by Pumas and a draw by Chivas, they will remain in the top eight going into Round 16. The two sides played a relatively dull match where Tigres’ finishing was poor and Jaguares struggled to create opportunities, their best coming when Jackson Martinez hit the crossbar in the second half.
Atlas and Pachuca are playing in the night cap, already underway from Estadio Jalisco.
