Manchester United will be without the services of central defender Rio Ferdinand when they take on Turkish Champions Bursaspor in Bursa on Tuesday as the club look to rest the England captain and hope to maintain a recent run of good form in the Premier League.
Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand Misses Bursaspor Trip, Will Play Next United Match Through Twitter
As Manchester United remain level on points with Arsenal and continue to chase Chelsea, passage into the round of 16 of the Champions League has yet to be secured. A tough match is sure to face the 2007-08 Champions League winners as Bursaspor, although struggling in Group C on 0 points, remain in good form in the Turkish Super League as league leaders.
While a statement from the club’s official website only states that Ferdinand will miss the trip, Ferdinand himself took the liberty to make a statement of his own on Twitter by saying:
“Just finished training this morning, good hard running session done. Reports that I’m not traveling to Turkey coz it will affect my back are once again WRONG, where do they get this rubbish from?”
So it looks as if Ferdinand is simply the recipient of some good Sir Alex Ferguson fortune having been granted the day off as the rest of the 20 man squad travel to Turkey to face a hostile crowd away from home.
Also in Rio Ferdinand related Twitter news but not recently reported, Ferdinand on Monday didn’t Tweet: “Great training session this morning followed by delicious lunch. Gonna play the next match against Wolves from home on Twitter. Should be a good one Tweeps!”
Ferdinand's announcement to defended against Wolves striker Kevin Doyle from his couch through Twitter marks a monumental declaration of intent as it pertains to the compounding of social media and its integration into modern football.
Will other footballers soon follow Ferdinand’s brave and visionary steps? Or has Ferdinand taken his love of communicating with his ‘Tweeps’ one step too far? Regardless of your opinion on the matter, Ferdinand continues to annoy both opposition attackers with his staunch brand of defending and the masses through his tendency to Tweet just a bit too much.
