Stoke City 2-0 Liverpool: Kenwyne Jones’s Work Pays Off With Insurance Goal

How’s this of a packed league: With their win over Liverpool, Stoke City moves from 18th to 10th place in the Premier League. A large part of that is due to Kenwyne Jones’ 91st minute goal, giving the Potters a 2-0 lead.

The match had become wide-open in its last 10 minutes, with Stoke City continuously able to break-out of their own end against a Liverpool side pushing for an equalizer. Whether it was Matthew Etherington or Dean Whitehead or Jermaine Pennant, somebody was busting Stoke out of their own end and threatening to put Liverpool out of their misery. Just before stoppage time it was Jon Walters going wide with a bending shot from 18 yards out. In the 91st minute, it was the man whose hard work had stressed the Liverpool line all night.

Kenwyne Jones had not generated many clear chances, but his strength had given Martin Skrtel and Sioritis Kyrgiakos trouble throughout the night. When Pennant put the Stoke striker through in stoppage time, that strength allowed Jones to hold-off Skrtel, finish into the lower left of Pepe Reina’s net, and give the Potters their second straight victory.

With the win, Stoke City vaults all the way into 10th place, passing Liverpool on goal difference. If Sunderland is beaten by two or more at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Stoke could finish the weekend ninth (should Everton lose), climbing nine spots with one win.
