The fact that Zilina scored even one goal makes me feel like an idiot. Coming into today’s matches, I’d see their results and started to wonder if they weren’t one of the worst teams in Champions League history. Chelsea is limping, but certainly Zilina - a Zilina team coming off a 7-0 loss at home to Marseille - wasn’t a real threat. Right?
UEFA Champions League Update: Chelsea Down To Zilina, Basel Up On Cluj
Apparently I was dead wrong. I was wrong in my predictions, and I was wrong in my rant. Chelsea is down a goal at Stamford Bridge after 19 minutes.
According to the BBC, the goal came from Babatounde Bello, who poked a ball past Russ Turnbull after behind released on goal by Robert Jez. For Zilina, it was only their second goal of the tournament, having been outscored 1-15 in their four losses.
Bello’s goal was the second of the 2:45 p.m. Eastern start times, with Swiss champions Basel having taken a 15th minute lead on visiting CFR Cluj. The Romanian champions fell behind when Federico Almerares slotted him a Samuel Inkoom set-up from the middle of the box.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have just taken leads (updates to come) through Karim Benzema and Mario Gomez. Arsenal and Braga are still scoreless in Portugal, while Auxerre and Milan are still 0-0.
