The day couldn’t have started worse for Roma. While they’re three points ahead of FC Basel for second place in Group E, they would lose the head-to-head tiebreaker. Now down two goals at the Stadio Olimpico to Bayern Munich, Roma is staring third place in the face, with Basel up on CFR Cluj.
Roma Vs. Bayern Munich: Super Mario Gomez Brace Has Munchen Up Two
For Bayern, it’s the man that’s been one of the sole sources of offense over the last month, Mario Gómez. The German international has scored goals in the 33rd and 39th minutes to give Munchen a commanding victory.
Gómez’s first goal came after Franck Ribery found him in the middle of the area, allowing the striker to finish from near the spot. The second goal came after Thomas Müller put Gómez through on goal, with the finish low and to the far, right post putting Bayern up two.
With one point, Bayern will clinch first place in Group E. One point would also keep Roma in second place ahead of their final group stage match against Cluj.
Elswehre, Alvaro Arbeloa has doubled Real Madrid’s lead in Amsterdam (update to come), Arsenal and Braga have gone to halftime scoreless. Partizan and Shakhtar are also without a goal, as is the match in Auxerre between AJA and Milan.
But the most surprising result thus far: Chelsea has been taken to halftime down 1-0 to visiting Slovakian champions Zilina, who are looking for their first point in Champions League. Chelsea is looking to clinch Group F, which they would do with a draw.
