“Provided they can hold on” is the phrase I used at the end of the Micah Richards goal update, the kind of equivocation I don’t usually throw into a match update. But there was something about what was going on at the Britannia, with City’s inability to handle Kenwyne Jones. Their 82nd minute, go-ahead goal seemed more vulnerable than most late tallies.
Stoke City Vs. Manchester City: Matthew Etherington Stoppage Time Equalizer Has Stoke Share Points With City
On one hand, that equivocation proved prescient, though if I was thinking Jones would be the Potter hero, I was wrong. Instead, it was a deft back heal from Tuncay Sanli, sprinting left wing Matthew Etherington on the left side of City’s area, that created the goal. When Joe Hart could not close down the shot in time, Stoke had their equalizer.
Though City had more control over the match, particularly in the second half, the result was far from unjust. Stoke and City each put four shots on the others’ net, with the Potters recording twice as many overall shots.
The draw takes Stokes unbeaten streak to four and allows them to stay in eighth place. For City, the missed opportunity means they are two points behind Chelsea, five back of league-leading Manchester United, with the Blues set to play tomorrow in Newcastle.
