Newcastle have found an early breakthrough at St James' Park against the (again) stuttering Champions. The Toon came close just minutes into the match when Petr Cech was forced to save a close range Steven Taylor header from a free kick. Cech parried the ball into the waiting path of Shola Ameobi who was only able to rattle the side netting.
Newcastle United Vs. Chelsea: Early Alex Error Gifts Andy Carroll, Newcastle 1-0 Lead
Moments later in the sixth minute, Newcastle continued their search for the game's opener when they attacked narrowly down the center of the pitch. Wayne Routledge attempted a through ball into the path of Andy Carroll who was beaten by Chelsea's Alex. Alex then touched the ball past the on-rushing Cech and Carroll was able to round Cech at pace and tap in the opener.
With the goal, Carroll has scored his ninth league goal of the season as Newcastle look to rebound from last weekend’s 1-5 defeat away to Bolton. In other news of note at St James’ Park, Newcastle are without both of their first choice center backs due to suspension (Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson) and have been forced to start Steven Taylor and Sol Campbell in the heart of defense.
