Leslie Osborne’s one of the more recognizable faces and affable personalities in Women’s Professional Soccer, and her profile should see a slight lift on Sunday. That’s when the Boston Breakers co-captain will be running the New York Marathon, though it’s unlikely she’s doing it for the attention. Instead, the midfield destroyer will be raising funds and awareness for Grass Roots Soccer, an organization founded by Ethan Zohn that seeks to help HIV prevention in Africa. With today’s run, Osborne is hoping to raise at least $5,000 for the organization.
Charity, Injury Comeback Has Boston Breaker Leslie Osborne Running New York City Marathon
↵For Osborne, this will be her first major action since having he season ended prematurely by a broken collarbone. That injury coincided with a dip in Breakers’ form, ending hope that she would get a long-awaited recall into the national team. Per Women’s Pro Soccer, the injury left Osborne “largely immobilized” for six weeks, but by mid-October, she was running half marathons.
↵The New York City Marathon begins at 9:00 a.m. Eastern on Sunday. For more information on Osborne and Grass Roots Soccer, you and visit the midfielder’s fundraising page.
