What a frustrating half for Tottenham Hotspur supporters. Their team controlled the 45 minutes, out-shooting Sunderland 12-3 (3-0, on goal) while retaining 65 percent of the possession. Rafael van der Vaart was active in the middle. The right flank was there for the taking. Tottenham had multiple avenues to goal.
Tottenham Hotspur 0-0 Sunderland: All Control, No Edge, Sees Spurs Into Half Goalless
The problem came at the end of each of those streets. Call it cutting edge. Call it crafting a final ball. Call it finishing. Fine, fine, fine, though the finishing part may not be applicable. Spurs were not able to consistently create the type of chances that would have put them ahead. Tom Huddlestone rattled the woodwork once, and Craig Gordon has had to make three stops, but for the most part, Spurs were lacking the clear-cut chances their possession should have produced.
At this rate, you’d expect Spurs to stumble onto a goal before the final whistle, but with Sunderland starting to coming into the match (if only slightly) at half’s end, Tottenham’s easiest spell of the game may have ended scoreless.
