Timbers Are Treading Heavily

It obviously remains to be seen how successful the Portland Timbers will be on the field, but they are doing all the right things to draw attention off of it. The latest example of the Timbers’ flare for the dramatic was the unveiling of their kits for the 2011 MLS season.

↵Using an Alaska Airlines hangar as their backdrop, the Timbers had a “runway on a runway” with players modeling their bold two-toned kits. Their primary strip has two shades of green, while their secondary shirt is two shades of red. Both are well outside the standard, even if they have been met with mixed reviews.

Combined with the huge billboards that are going up all around town, the ad their getting ready to run on local TV stations and the way they've called press conferences to introduce almost every player they've signed, it's pretty obvious the Timbers are not intending to just go along and get along. This is surely rubbing many the wrong way, not the least of whom are Sounders fans.

↵You could call a lot of this hubris, and maybe it is. But MLS needs more teams to demand attention in their markets, rather than begging for it.
