In the first two of three Sunday derbies in the English Premier League, Bolton and Wolverhampton, got one-goal, home victories over local rivals. Bolton, Wolverhampton Win Sunday Derbies
Bolton and Blackburn went to half time tied 0-0, in large part due to Blackburn rolling out their 5-4-1 formation to start the match. Sam Allardyce changed his approach ten minutes into the second half but only after Trotters midfielder Mark Davies saw a second yellow card. Owen Coyle was forced to bring on Fabrice Muamba to reinforce the midfield, a move which yielded a goal when Muama scored from 16 yards out in the 65th minute. David Hoillet and Jason Roberts would set-up Mam Biram Diouf's 87th minute equalizer, but Holden's left-footed half volley from 17 yards out would give Bolton a match-winner one minute later.
Bolton moves fifth, pending Tottenham's match with Chelsea. Bolton is even on points with Spurs, holding a superior goal difference. Blackburn sits 14th.
In Wolverhampton, Birmingham failed to put a shot on goal, allowing Wolves to stay on the front foot the entire match. Of their 13 shots on Ben Foster, only Stephen Hunt's 45th minute attempt getting through. The Wolves midfielder was the beneficiary of Sylvain Ebanks-Blanks' work, the Wolverhampton striker creating the chance with a nice run to (and cross from) the byline, to the right of goal.
Wolves stay in 19th despite the win, but they are now only one point back of 17th place Fulham while putting three point distance between themselves and last place West Ham. Birmingham finishes the weekend in 16th place.
