The Brotherly Game Discusses Faryd Mondragon With Big D Soccer
Unless you follow the Colombian national team, Turkish soccer or the Bundesliga, there's a pretty good chance you haven't seen goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon play much. The 39-year-old is apparently close to signing with the Philadelphia Union and luckily for The Brotherly Game, they were able to find someone who has seen Mondragon play quite a bit.
Daniel Robertson, who usually writes for Big D Soccer and an avid follower of the Bundesliga, sat down with TBG’s Scott Kessler to discuss Mondragon. Generally speaking, Robertson had good things to say about Mondragon, who was starting for FC Koln until a recent demotion.
In the ten or so games of Cologne I’ve seen, Mondragón is decisive and strong with good shot blocking abilities. He can suffer on coming quickly off his line, but commands the penalty box very well. The way to beat Mondragón is definitely on the ground because he’ll get most crosses.
Like many observers, the big concern Robertson has is with the amount of money the Union will be wrapping up in a position that is generally the lowest paid in MLS.
Ehh...he'll be good for a couple of years, no doubt but is he $250k better than a Jon Busch? Doubtful. Remember Colorado just won the championship with Matt Pickens in goal, a keeper who most would probably put around the middle of the pack.
