While United will be pleased with their halftime lead, the scoreline in this match is lying. A more appropriate interval mark on a luckier day would read 2-0, or even 3-0. United's Anderson and Dimitar Berbatov both hit Craig Gordon's post and Wayne Rooney has placed a couple of shots on goal that have only troubled Gordon somewhat. The real story of the match however has been United's fluidity in attack largely thanks to the return of Ryan Giggs.
Manchester United Vs. Sunderland: Red Devils Take Deserved 1-0 Lead Into Half, Ryan Giggs Impressing
Giggs looks refreshed, bright, quick and creative in attack for United while he and Wayne Rooney have seemingly had their way in the final third of Sunderland's half. Giggs thus far has played more of a roaming central midfield creative role as opposed to creating much natural width down his familiar left flank. His pace has bordered on blistering while his passing borders on brilliant.
Still, Sunderland have retreated to form a staunch enough line and have kept United out of goal since minute five. While they’ve mostly been pre-occupied with figuring out how to slow down Giggs, Rooney and Berbatov, they’ve shown little in attack. As an interesting second half begins, the question that remains is whether or not Sunderland will be able to keep out a United side resembling their best form, or if a goal onslaught awaits them.
