Pardon my awful pun headline, but it’s hard not to be silly when you’re talking about this stadium mock-up a group of Miami soccer supporters has released.
God Bless Miami Soccer Fans, But This Stadium Idea Won’t Float
↵
↵Don’t get me wrong, it’s a neat idea, but does anyone really think this is going to get built? I’m assuming waterfront property in Miami is probably about as expensive as any in the United States. Beyond that, anytime you try to build something that goes beyond the standard, there are significant costs associated with that. Basically, we’re talking about a very expensive proposition here. Back in the day when Seattle had a NBA team, they talked about building an arena on a pier. That was going to cost about $1 billion. You have to imagine that’s the kind of money we’re talking about in Miami to get this thing built.
↵I have no doubt there are developers in Southern Florida who could manage this kind of risk, I just don’t know why they would do it. Even ignoring the past and current failure of Southern Florida soccer teams, that area just doesn’t seem to want to attend sporting events that don’t involve helmets, shoulder pads and time to gather your breath between plays.
↵Then again, Qatar just won the right the World Cup based on the same kind of imagination. Who am I to say Miami can’t be the Qatar of MLS?
