West Bromwich Albion came out stronger at The Hawthorns, stringing together long sequences of passes against a lethargic Newcastle side. The Toon woke-up after 15 minutes, leaving the teams to stand on even footing after half an hour. It was then that the Baggies took the lead.
West Bromwich Albion Vs. Newcastle United: Somen Tchoyi Slots Baggies To First Half Lead
A pass played into the right of the Newcastle area was collected by attacker Somen Tchoyi, who was faced with an ill-prepared Magpie defense. Left back Jose Enrique was giving too much space to a man only 16 yards out, so when Tchoyi opened up space on his left foot, nobody was in position to contest a shot that curled inside Tim Krul’s far post, giving the Baggies a 1-0 lead.
For Tchoyi, it was his second goal in as many matches, his third since joining West Brom at the beginning of the season. For Newcastle, the goal was a small sign that a defense missing both central defenders is a step below it’s normal standard, particularly with 36-year-old Sol Campbell looking stiff in the West Bromwich cold.
With the sides two minutes from half, West Brom maintains their 1-0 lead.
