Newcastle United had seen the better for play for most of the second half, looking to equalize Somen Tchoyi’s first half opener. That all changed with a slip from Danny Guthrie, apparently injuring his right knee near the center circle, giving the ball away to Peter Odemwingie. A few seconds later, the West Bromwich Albion attacker had his team’s second goal, giving the Baggies a 2-0 lead.
West Bromwich Albion Vs. Newcastle United: Danny Guthrie Slip, Injury Clears Way For Peter Odemwingie Goal
Guthrie’s mishap came in the middle of the pitch, just as he seemed ready to put a pass out to the right flank. The midfielder’s left leg seemed to buckle so that when he tried to bring his right foot down on the ball, it went into the ground.
Odemwingie picked up the ball as raced to the Newcastle area, holding off Magpie defenders while doing so. Just as it appeared he would be better suited to lay-off to one of two oncoming attackers, Odemwingie fired a left-footed shot from 17 yards out into Tim Krul’s lower right hand corner, giving the Baggies a needed insurance goal.
Guthrie was subsequently stretchered from the field and replaced by Alan Smith in central midfield. Chris Hughton has also brought on attacker Nile Ranger as Newcastle chase their 2-0 deficit.
