A late consolation goal for Newcastle did little to mar the day for West Bromwich Albion, winning 3-1 in the English Premier League’s early kick-off, jumping to seventh in the league. An opener from Somen Tchoyi followed by a late brace from Peter Odemwingie had the Baggies up 3-0, with a stoppage time goal from Peter Lovenkrands providing Newcastle their only positive news.

And even that goal deserves a suspicious glare. Just as West Brom’s first should have been called back for offside (Odemwinigie in a place where he could have been affecting the `keeper), Newcastle’s goal would not have happened had Andy Carroll not used his arm to trap the ball coming in from the right flank. But with the foul unnoticed, Lovenkrands’ put-back of Scott Carson’s save was allowed, dirtying Brom’s clean sheet.
Roberto di Matteo’s unlikely to care. Two weeks after relegation was back in the Baggie picture, the West Bromwich Albion coach has led his team to seventh place, outscoring Everton and Newcastle 7-2 in the process. With 22 points, Brom sits one place and point behind Bolton.
Newcastle is down to 11th place, having gone winless since beating Arsenal at the Emirates on November 7. The Magpies are still without central defenders Mike Williamson and Fabricio Coloccini for one more match, each coming to the end of their three match suspension. Compounding those absences, Danny Guthrie was stretched from the field in the 81st minute after an apparent injury to his right leg.
