7500 To Holte: Liverpool, Aston Villa A Match-Up Of Disappointments
Things are starting to get worrisome at Aston Villa, and with today’s trip to Anfield, few are expecting the worries to stop soon. Instead, the focus is on Gerard Houllier’s return to Merseyside, though that scarcely seems reason to overlook two underachieving clubs who, approaching the mid-way point of the season, need to start collecting three point matches if Europe is a reasonable goal.
That’s a perspective Aaron Campeau, one of the authors at Aston Villa blog 7500 to Holte, hones in on leading-up to today’s 3:00 p.m. Eastern match:
Relative to their recent history and expectations,Liverpool and Aston Villaare in somewhat similar positions this season. Most supporters of both teams had some concerns coming into the year, but I'd be surprised if anyone would have envisioned what's happened. Villa started fairly well and have fallen off of late while Liverpool have shaken off an absolute disaster of a beginning to claw their way back towards something approaching respectability. This is a huge game for both sides; the table is so incredibly tight that dropping points can have immediate and serious consequences.
If Liverpool loses, they’ll be 13th. If Villa loses, they stay 16th. These are last season’s 7th and 6th place finishers, each having the talent to replicate those finishes. But time’s ticking away, and after today’s match, each club will have a 16 in the “MP” column.
