The phrase is “life imitates art,” right? During the process of thinking out this post, I’ve become confused, trying to convince myself that art imitating life makes more sense.
Mike Myers and Samuel L. Jackson Are Going To Save Liverpool (Or Make The Worst Movie Ever)
Apparently, that phrasing makes more sense to Mike Jefferies and Dan Hubbard, feature film makers who are planning a movie about the current state of affairs at Liverpool FC. Jefferies did the Disney trilogy Goal while Hubbard's cast the Bourne movies as well as King Kong. With both men being life-long Reds supporters, the pair look set to eviscerate Tom Hicks, with some big name talent set to help.
Unfortunately, that’s where art imitating life starts to go wrong.
According to Mirror Football, the Cat in the Hat and Jules Winnfield have offered their acting services. Worse, it sounds as if Jefferies and Hubbard think that’s a good idea. Mike Myers hasn’t done a good movie since the first Austin Powers, a film that’s holding-up as well as an old nun’s triceps. Samuel Jackson’s act jumped the shark about the same time shark jumping was relevant. Together, they may make a funny pair, if only unintentionally.
We all remember what happened the last time Mike Myers had significant screen time with an out-spoken black man.
Perhaps these guys could be good in a flick’s supporting cast, but these are not names you want above the title on the poster.
At some point, Liverpool fans should be allowed to tap out. Their ownership is horrible. Every player on their team is underachieving. They can’t get a stadium commensurate with the club’s stature, and their club is one point above the drop.
Why are Mike Myers and Samuel L. Jackson being sent to make their lives worse?
Perhaps this casting would be part of the point - meta-commentary on the affairs at Liverpool. If you want to make a movie describing the growing frustrations around Anfield, what better way to do so that anger your audience the same way Hicks’ ownership has antagonized Reds supporters worldwide?
Jefferies and Hubbard are brilliant.
