We have our first goal in the Merseyside Derby thanks to some good wing play from Glen Johnson, strong work from Dirk Kuyt and an emphatic finish from Raul Meireles. While the first 30 minutes were viewed as cagey and tight, Liverpool enjoyed the game's best chance until the actual goal when Fernando Torres rattled Time Howard's crossbar.
Liverpool Vs. Everton: Raul Meireles Opens Scoring For Reds At Anfield
Here’s how the opener broke down:
Johnson probed down the left flank in attack and was able to beat Everton's right back Phil Neville with a good cross into the box which found Kuyt near Howard's left. Kuyt's first effort, a header, was saved from close range by Howard and a rebound was produced. The ball then trickled back to Kuyt who then struck only to hit Howard's post and was denied. However, Kuyt's rebound found its way to Raul Meireles who settled the ball just inside the box and struck past Howard who was only coming back into position and could do little to keep the shot out.
Soon after, Liverpool enjoyed another great chance in front of goal from close range, but Maxi Rodriguez blasted over and out. With five minutes plus stoppage left to play in the first half, the score is 1-0 to Liverpool.
