Steven Pienaar has used his Twitter account to end speculation over whether he will join Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur, with both clubs having settled on a fee for the Everton winger's services. Most had assumed he'd be joining Spurs, and his twitter message confirms those suspicions:
Steven Pienaar Going To Spurs, Announcement Via His Twitter Account
To end speculation I am going to Spurs. I've had brilliant years at Everton and it will always be a special place in my heart.
Yesterday, Spurs matched Chelsea’s bid of £3M for the winger, and with Pienaar likely believing he’ll have more opportunities to make an impact at Tottenham, he’s chosen North London. It is believed that Pienaar’s wages will be around £70,000 per week.
With Everton struggling in the league, this move might be more about the club it hurts rather than the club it helps. In the 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday, Leon Osman started in place of the South African, and failing a big move before the end of January, will likely retain that spot. At Spurs, Pienaar will likely be a squad player, filling in for Gareth Bale when the Welshman is unavailable. Yet with Everton set to lose Pienaar on a free transfer at the end of the summer, the Toffees had very little choice in the matter, and are likely just happy to have gained a bit of cash.
