Sunderland's pursuit of Stephane Sessegnon's signature has ended with a succesful capture of the Beninese midfielder. Sunderland had been connected with the 26 year-old for most of the month, and for good reason: Sessegnon is an exciting midfield playmaker, and was recently featured in Aston Villa blog 7500 to Holte's Player in My Pocket series:

The beauty of Sessegnon’s game is evident immediately. His dribbling skills are world class and he can create a chance from nothing. He’s the type of player that can dribble his way out of two or three defenders to find an open player. Occasionally, he’ll fire a deadly missile on net without warning from either foot. All that aside, his versatility is his biggest weapon. Sessegnon can play on the right, left or down the middle. A playmaker is what he is and creating is his game.
Coming in at a little under £5.6M, Sessegnon wasn’t exactly cheap, but it was going to take a significant sum of money to pry him away from Paris St.-Germain, where he had plied his trade since 2011. Although he had found himself on the bench for much of the season, Sessegnon’s skills have been obvious whenever he’s taken the field, although his discipline and consistency could do with some more polish. His seeming inability to perform at high levels for long periods of time is why he was a mid-level transfer push for Sunderland rather than a monster transfer, so if Steve Bruce’s side can settle him down, even a little bit, they’ll have a thoroughly exciting talent on their hands for the next few years.
